Mon March 20, 2006 Matt Sing has become just the 6th player in premiership history to pass 100 tries when he scored a hat-trick in the Cowboys 20-16 victory against a determined Manly outfit at Dairy Farmers Stadium. Sing joins illustrious names Ken Irvine, Andrew Ettingshausen, Terry Lamb, Harold Horder and Steven Menzies in passing 150 premiership tries. Sing made his debut for the Penrith Panthers in 1994 where he was hailed as the next Steve Renouf wearing a trademark Renouf headgear at the time but has since become an outstanding player in his own right. North Queensland led 16-4 at halftime with Sing scoring the first two tries and Brett Firman crossing three minutes before the break. Steve Bell scored Manly's only try in the first half 18 minutes into the match. Sing's 3rd try pushed the Cowboys clear at 20-4 but two quick tries from Brett Stewart in the 51st and 62nd minute's saw the Sea Eagles saw back into the match. The Cowboys had to dig extremely deep as Aaron Payne (neck), Travis Norton (head clash) and Sing (lower back) were forced off with injuries leaving the home side with just one fresh replacement. Manly after a disappointing first up loss at home to wooden spoon contenders Canberra showed an excellent improvement against one of genuine title contenders in front of over 23,000 Cowboys supporters. |
